Our international adoption program makes it possible for rescued cats to start new lives abroad, transforming their futures while giving adopters a companion who’s already proven to be a survivor.   Why International Adoptions Matter The reality in Greece is tough: overpopulation of strays, limited local adopters, and a constant influx of abandoned animals needing care. Without international adoptions, many cats would never know the safety of a real home. In 2024 alone, 61 of our cats and dogs traveled abroad to join their forever families. Each adoption freed up space at our sanctuary, allowing us to save even more lives.   From Rescue to Forever Home: How It Works Rescue & Rehabilitation Cats are rescued from the streets, given medical treatment, tests, vaccinations, sterilization, and the love they’ve never known before. Matching with Families Adoption applications from abroad are carefully reviewed. We match each cat with the right household to ensure a lifetime of happiness for both. Health & Travel Prep We take care of microchipping, blood tests, passports, vaccinations, and travel crates - everything required for international adoption.   The Journey Some cats fly with flight volunteers, while others travel with their adopters. We provide guidance to make the trip as stress-free as possible. Arrival & Homecoming Families welcome their new companion, and we stay in touch for post-adoption support. The joy of seeing a rescued cat thrive in a loving home is worth every step.   The Challenges & Costs International adoptions are life-saving, but they’re not without challenges. On average, bringing one cat up to health and preparing them for travel costs around €300 . This covers vaccinations , sterilization , microchipping , blood and fecal tests , paperwork , and a safe travel carrier . The adoption costs are only partly covered - the rest depends on donations and sponsorships from kind supporters.   Success Stories Frisco - From Broken Jaw to Beloved Companion Frisco was born near a taverna in Crete and later struck by a car, leaving his jaw shattered. For over a year, he suffered untreated - until a kind vet stepped in, performing multiple surgeries. Once healed, Frisco came to our sanctuary in Athens, where his gentle, affectionate nature shone through.Despite being FIV-positive and having a quirky little jaw that never fully closed, he charmed everyone he met. One volunteer, in particular, fell in love with him and knew she couldn’t leave without making him part of her family. Today, Frisco is thriving in his forever home, living proof that resilience and love can overcome even the hardest pasts. Thomas - A Bond That Crossed Borders Thomas was rescued from a difficult life on the streets, unsure if he could trust humans. He came to our sanctuary and everyone fell in love with him. Thomas met Irina, a volunteer at our sanctuary who traveled from France to help our mission. Their connection was instant. Day after day, Thomas followed her, seeking affection only from her. It became clear to everyone that they belonged together.When Irina returned home, she took Thomas with her. Sterilization & TNR Controlling overpopulation is key to reducing suffering on the streets. Through our ongoing sterilization and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs, we’ve made a real impact. Total Cats Sterilized in 2025 : 40 Medical Care & Emergency Rescues From life-saving surgeries to long-term care, every rescue receives the treatment they need to heal. Cats Rescued and Treated in 2025 : 50–60   Noel: Our Christmas Miracle Some rescues stay in your heart forever - and Noel’s story is one of them. In December 2022, our founder found a tiny, lifeless kitten curled up on a burlap coffee bag outside a local café. Her breathing was shallow, her body was ice cold, and a large necrotic wound in her mouth made eating impossible. No one thought she’d survive. We rushed her to safety, warmed her fragile body, and transferred her to the vet, where her temperature was below 35°C and her chances were slim. But Noel wasn’t ready to give up. Every sip of water hurt, every breath was a struggle, yet she kept fighting - maybe because for the first time, someone was fighting for her. Weeks later, that frail kitten became a playful, affectionate cat who filled our sanctuary with joy. In January 2024, Noel traveled to her forever home abroad. Today, she’s safe, loved, and thriving - a true Christmas miracle and a reminder of why we never stop.   Behind Every Number is a Story At Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T., every statistic represents a life transformed. Here are two stories that warm our hearts: Pingu: From Shelter Mascot to Forever Love Pingu wasn’t just any cat - he was a legend at our sanctuary. Rescued during a brutal snowstorm, he spent an entire freezing night meowing outside our doors, desperately calling for help. The next morning, when our team found him shivering in the snow, his life changed forever.From that day on, Pingu became the heart and soul of our shelter - a playful, affectionate cuddle king who greeted everyone like an old friend. He had a strong personality, endless energy, and a special love for head smushes. Visitors adored him, volunteers doted on him, and yet, despite his charm, he spent years waiting for his perfect family.Finally, after all that time, his moment came. In June 2025, Pingu boarded a plane to his forever home abroad. Today, the cat who once braved the cold streets now spends his days surrounded by love, warmth, and the security he always deserved.   Boubou: Proof That Love Sees Beyond Sight When Boubou arrived, she was a tiny, fragile kitten found near the Neos Kosmos metro station - completely blind, in terrible condition, and in desperate need of care. Both of her eyes had to be removed, but nothing could dim her bright spirit.What happened next was extraordinary: within just a few days of joining our foster home, Boubou was reserved for adoption. Her blindness didn’t scare her future family away - it made them love her even more. They waited patiently as she grew stronger, and when she was ready to travel, this brave little fighter set off on her biggest journey yet.In July 2025, Boubou left for her forever home abroad, where she now spends her days being cherished for the sweet, playful soul she is. Her story proves that special-needs cats don’t just survive - they thrive when given a chance. Welcome to Let's Be SMART, our humble cat rescue sanctuary - where the floors are never clean, the paperwork is endless, and the cats? Oh, the cats are absolutely priceless. Managing a cat rescue isn’t just a job; it’s a nonstop, whirlwind adventure filled with fur, purrs, and the occasional chaos that keeps us on our toes (and occasionally covered in… well, you can guess).   Cleaning: Our Unexpected Workout Program If you ever wondered what “cleaning all day” really means in a cat rescue, imagine a never-ending battle against litter, fur tumbleweeds, and the infamous “mystery stains.” Mopping, sweeping, sanitizing - rinse and repeat - because, let’s face it, cats don’t just leave paw prints; they leave little pieces of themselves everywhere. Our dear Dakis is the self-appointed “floor supervisor” who insists on lying right in the middle of the clean-up zone, forcing us to clean around him like a ninja. It’s our version of cardio. Who needs a gym membership when you’ve got 50+ feline friends turning your sanctuary into their personal playground?   Vet Visits: The Cat Taxi Service Between feedings and cleanings, we moonlight as cat chauffeurs, racing to and from the vet with our precious passengers strapped in (or sometimes, very cleverly escaping carriers). Shots, check-ups, emergency visits - you name it. Our van sees more action than a racecar, and every trip is a blend of hope, nerves, and a lot of “please don’t make me stay at the vet” meows. Jasper is our resident drama king during vet visits, delivering Oscar-worthy performances that make us question if he’s really sick or just staging a feline soap opera.   Feeding and Meds: The Daily Juggle Feeding time is like orchestrating a furry symphony, with each cat having their own tastes and quirks. Some are gourmet snobs, others gobble like they haven’t eaten in days. Margot is a mischievous little foodie who somehow manages to sneak extra treats every time we turn our backs. And then there’s the medication - the delicate art of convincing a cat that swallowing bitter pills is actually a form of love. Spoiler alert: it rarely is. But those little victories, when a cat finally takes their meds without a fight, are worth every scratch and hiss.   Errands and Paperwork: The Unsung Heroes When we’re not elbow-deep in litter or calming a nervous kitty, we’re tackling the mountain of paperwork and errands. Adoption forms, rescue permits, supply runs, donations, schedules- it’s a lot. Aspen helps with the dishes by thoughtfully perching on our shoulder, supervising the entire process and occasionally swatting at the sponge like he’s helping. It’s the backbone of our sanctuary’s mission, making sure every whisker gets the care they deserve and every cat finds their forever home.   Extra Tasks: Because Every Day is Different No two days are alike here. One minute, you’re snuggling a shy rescue; the next, you’re improvising a toy or patching up a broken scratching post. It’s unpredictable, exhausting, and utterly rewarding. We only ask for a 90€ adoption fee, which covers: ✔  All necessary paperwork and passport ✔  Complete vetting, including: Full vaccinations Spay/neuter surgery Deworming & defleaing Fecal testing Screening for common diseases Travel carrier or crate. Your cat will be healthy, socialized, and ready to travel when you are.   How long does the adoption process take? Once you fill out the adoption application, we contact you immediately to discuss details. After approval and signing the adoption contract, we prepare your cat’s documents and organize the trip. The process is quick and stress-free!   What are the adoption requirements? We take the well-being of our cats seriously, so our adoption application includes questions to understand your lifestyle and household setup. We also conduct a brief interview to ensure your home is suitable and that the cat you choose is truly the right fit.   Can I adopt internationally? Absolutely! We arrange adoptions all around the world and handle everything - from documents to flight arrangements - so your experience is smooth.   Do you allow trial adoptions? We don’t recommend trial adoptions because changing environments can cause stress for cats, especially shy ones. Our careful application and interview process ensures the right match from the start. A Day in the Life of an LBS Volunteer Volunteering at our sanctuary isn’t just about scooping litter (although yes, there’s plenty of that!). It’s about caring for over 100 cats and a 6 lovable dogs, making sure they’re healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. You’ll help with feeding, cleaning, enrichment, playtime, and giving lots of love. And sometimes … you’ll find yourself refereeing a playful kitten wrestling match! Funny reality check? What You’ll Experience as an Intern   Direct Animal Care Assist with daily treatments, health checks, and enrichment activities for rescued cats. Our adoption program has successfully placed nearly 600 cats and 10 dogs in loving homes in Greece, Europe, UK and USA. We take a thoughtful approach to matchmaking, ensuring that adopters are prepared for long-term care and that the animals are set up for success. From paperwork to travel logistics, we handle every step, making the process smooth and stress-free for both humans and animals. Preventative care is also central to our work. Through year-round Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs and emergency medical services, we help reduce suffering and control overpopulation. In cooperation with local municipalities, we support community cat colonies by providing food, treatments, and winter shelters in areas like Varkiza and Kalivia. Education is another pillar of our mission. From workshops and school visits to our S.M.A.R.T. animated video series - available in English, Greek, and Arabic - we empower children and adults alike to make compassionate, informed choices. These resources, officially approved by the Greek Ministry of Education, help foster lifelong empathy starting from a young age. We’re also proud to host an international volunteer program. Since 2018, more than 300 volunteers from around the world have joined us - students, professionals, and travelers alike. They help with everything from daily animal care and cleaning routines to fundraising and social media, often forming life-long bonds with both the animals and each other. For those in animal sciences, our veterinary internship program offers an unparalleled hands-on experience. These beautiful souls have overcome adversity, and each one has a unique story to tell. If you’ve ever considered adopting a blind cat, now is the perfect time to meet your match.   Baby and Lenti: A Bond Forged in Darkness  ( Baby 06/2023 and Lenti 05/2022) Baby and Lenti are a bonded pair with an extraordinary connection. Both were rescued under painful circumstances. Baby had to undergo major surgery to remove both eyes due to a detached cornea and high eye pressure. He has emerged as a curious and adventurous spirit who navigates his environment with confidence. He enjoys playtime and meeting new friends. Lenti, by contrast, is calm and affectionate. He loves curling up on a cozy bed or relaxing on our high cat trees, where he peacefully observes the world around him. Despite their blindness, Baby and Lenti complement each other perfectly and are happiest when together. These sightless cats would thrive in a quiet, loving home where their deep bond can continue to flourish.   Braille: A Senior Seeking Serenity (1/2010) Braille spent over a decade near the Acropolis before losing her sight—likely due to an accident. This graceful senior cat now seeks a serene forever home for her golden years. Independent yet affectionate, Braille appreciates calm environments and gentle company. While she’s not a lap cat, she enjoys lounging in warm sunbeams on our safe netted balconies. Once she feels comfortable, she loves cuddles and affection. Perfect for a quiet adult home, Braille would do best with someone who understands the quiet charm of adopting a blind cat. Her peaceful presence makes her an ideal companion for anyone ready to offer love and patience.   Bowie: The Spirited Explorer (8/2024) Despite losing his sight to a severe eye infection, Bowie’s adventurous spirit remains unshaken. Bowie was rescued as a kitten and, despite all efforts, needed both eyes removed to relieve his suffering. Active, playful, and endlessly curious, Bowie loves climbing, exploring, and playing with sound-based toys. He also thrives on affection and often seeks out close contact with his favorite humans. A calm atmosphere and patient adopters would suit Bowie best. Like many of our blind rescue cats, he adores our netted balconies—running, jumping, and discovering every corner. Bowie’s story is a reminder that blind cat adoption is not about limitation—it’s about celebrating a joyful, unbreakable spirit.   Dolce: The Gentle Hugger (05/2024) Dolce was rescued from a busy road in Glyfada after being hit by a car, which left him blind. Though returned to our shelter after a brief adoption, his loving nature remains unchanged. Dolce is sweet, affectionate, and may still see shadows, which help him get around. He prefers calm spaces and gentle sounds and would do wonderfully in a home that offers consistency, affection, and the patience to help him feel safe. Adopting special needs pets like Dolce gives you the chance to make a lasting difference in a cat’s life.   Daphne: A Shy Beauty Waiting for Her Chance (10/2024) Daphne is a visually impaired rescue from the streets of Athens with a gentle, quiet soul. She’s still adjusting to life at the cat sanctuary, and though she’s shy, her beauty and sweet nature are unmistakable. With patience and time, Daphne will come out of her shell and become a loyal, loving companion. She’s already made huge strides under our care, and we’re confident she will thrive in the right home.   Latte: Seeing the World Through Love (06/2024) Hi, I’m Latte! I may not have eyes, but I have a heart full of love and curiosity. Rescued with my siblings from a yard in Saronida, I had to have my eyes removed to relieve a painful infection. My sister Chai has already found her forever home—and now it’s my turn. I’m sweet, affectionate, and love cozy corners, head rubs, and plush toys. I might be shy at first, but once I trust you, I’ll ask for belly rubs and treat time. I get along well with other cats and would do best in a calm home—either solo or with feline companions. Despite my blindness, I adapt quickly and navigate well. I just need some time and a gentle voice to help me feel safe. I’m in perfect health and don’t require any special care—just someone who understands the beauty of adopting a blind cat.   Why Adopt a Blind Cat?
