Hi, I'm Garfunkel

I should be upfront with you: I am not going to run up to you. I am probably not even going to stay in the same part of the room as you, at least not at first. When you come in, I will find a high spot on the cat tree and I will watch you from there, and I will decide when — or whether — to come any closer. That decision is mine and I cannot be rushed on it.

I came to the shelter on November 25th, 2025, because a rescue partner went to collect two other kittens in Athens and I happened to be there, so they took me too. I was born on July 20th, 2025. I am neutered, vaccinated, no current conditions, no medications, no allergies. I prefer wet food. I am otherwise completely fine physically.

With other cats I am genuinely relaxed — I play with them, I climb with them, I exist among them without any tension or need to hide. That version of me is fully present and functioning. With humans I am not there yet. I do not want to be petted. I do not seek out company. I will not show affection in any visible way right now, and when someone new comes in, my instinct is to disappear. I am not aggressive — I do not hiss or scratch or swat — I simply leave. Quietly, without drama, but clearly.

What I do: I climb to the highest spots. I nap for long stretches. I come alive in the evenings. I will engage with a laser toy if the mood takes me, as long as there is enough distance involved. I explore cautiously when I feel safe enough to do so. I am quiet and I like it that way.

My future home needs to be someone who has done this before — who knows that consistency and patience and the complete absence of pressure is how shy cats eventually come around. Other calm cats would help me. A quiet environment would help me. Children would not help me, at this stage.

 

I am not a lost cause. I am a cat who needs time. I think I am worth it. I just need someone who agrees.
